The 36 One-anothers of Body Life

As I kept digging deeper into the nature of relationships and how we form them, I couldn’t find anywhere a list of all the places in the New Testament where we are given instruction on how to live with respect to “one-another.” I have since found others who have listed some or all of them, but none who have attempted to categorize them. Here is my best shot:

The 36 One-anothers of Body Life

Love one another by recognizing our belonging:

  • We are members of one another – Romans 12:5; Eph. 4:25
  • We have fellowship with one another if we walk in the light – 1Jn. 1:7

Love one another by our honor (attitude):

  • Honor one another, competitively! – Romans 12:10
  • Regard one another as more important than ourselves – Phil. 2:3
  • Be humble towards one another – 1Pe. 5:5
  • Submit to one another – Eph. 5:21
  • Seek after that which is good for one another – 1Th. 5:15
  • Be devoted to one another – Romans 12:10
  • Greet one another – Romans 16:16; 2Cor. 13:12; 1Pe. 5:14

Love one another by our encouragement (affective investment):

  • Encourage one another – 1 Th. 5:11; Heb. 3:13; 10:25
  • Stimulate one another – Heb. 10:24
  • Build up one another – Ro. 14:19; 1Th. 5:11
  • Comfort one another – 1Th. 4:18
  • Be kind to one another – Eph. 4:32
  • Speak to, teach, and admonish one another with song – Eph. 5:19; Col. 3:16
  • Love one another – Jn. 13:34-35; 15:12, 17; Ro. 13:8; 1Th. 3:12; 4:9; 2Th. 1:3; 1Pet. 1:22; 4:8;         1Jn. 3:11, 23; 4:7, 11, 12; 2Jn. 1:5

Love one another by our service (actions):

  • Serve one another according to your gift – Galatians 5:13; 1Pe. 4:10
  • Wash one another’s feet – Jn. 13:14
  • Have the same care for one another – 1Cor. 12:25
  • You are competent to counsel one another – Romans 15:14
  • Bear one another’s burdens – Galatians 6:2
  • Be hospitable to one another – 1Pe. 4:9
  • Pray for one another – Js. 5:16

Love one another by seeking unity (all-togetherness):

  • Be of the same mind with one another – Romans 12:16; 15:5
  • Confess your sins to one another – Js. 5:16
  • Forgive one another – Eph. 4:32; Col. 3:13
  • Show tolerance for one another – Ephesians 4:2; Col. 3:13
  • Be at peace with one another – Mk. 9:50; 1Th. 5:13
  • Accept one another – Romans 15:7
  • Wait for one another – 1Cor. 11:33

Love one another by avoiding:

  • Judging one another (Ro. 14:13)
  • Challenging/provoking one another (Gal. 5:26)  
  • Envying one another (Gal. 5:26)
  • Lying to each other (Col. 3:9)
  • Slandering one another (Jas. 4:11)
  • Complaining about one another (Jas. 5:9)
